Indian Railways is the principal mode of transportation for our freight and passengers. Integrating India for more than 164 years, Railways brings together people from the farthest corners of the country and makes possible the conduct of business, sightseeing, pilgrimage, healthcare and education. Being the world’s second largest passenger carrier, it transports daily a population equivalent to that of Australia. It is also the fourth biggest freight carrier and is part of a select group of countries with more than 1,000 billion tonnes of freight carried annually.
From modest beginnings in 1853, Indian Railways has grown into a vast network of 7,216 stations spread over a route length of 66,687 Km and runs multi-gauge operations on the entire route.
Indian Railways is progressing towards the goal of achieving higher standards of safety, speed, and service. The 14 lakh employees who make up ‘Team Railways’ have taken up rail transformation as a mission and are enthused by PM Narendra Modi’s vision of making Railways the growth engine that will drive our nation to a New India.
